Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog

Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog!

The Mad Cows is the EUI's female five-a-side soccer team. We play just for fun and absolute beginners are warmly welcomed. Playing with the Mad Cows is a nice way to do some sports and meet new people to share some beers with. The members of the Mad Cows come from all environments and all nationalities: EUI researchers from all the departments, partners, members of the staff and people from outside the EUI world.
See you on the pitch!

When the Wall came down: Mucche Pazze 0 – Mojito FC Vicchio 1

Being a passionate historian, I am very happy these days with the writing opportunities that the Mucche Pazze give me. Last week I could write about the jolliest barrack in the socialist camp. This week I can advance history even further and tell the story of when the wall came down. The wall – that was the Mucche Pazze tonight. All five of them, there were no subs, no reserves. That was Elena fresh back in goals, with a hairband à la Gigi Buffon. That was Alessia in defense, named “Il Muro Pronesti” by her greatest fan, Sara “Il Gesso”. That was Christel, covering the wings. That was Sandra, impeccable as always in defense, but convincing also in the unusual role of centravanti that she occasionally played. And that was tireless Mi Ah, on the left, on the right, up front – she hopefully gets paid by the mile. “The wall” stood firm like an oak, and it seemed to be standing there for the next 50 or 100 years, if the reasons for it were not removed.
But, if history is any teacher, walls come down, unless they are Chinese. For almost the entire game we believed that this one actually was Chinese, and that you could see it from the full moon that was shining over the Virgin grounds. But it was not. In the last minute, almost in the last second it came down. It was already shaking, when a shot hit the post. But it appeared to withstand the attack. And yet – it came down. And there was nothing we could do about it. Neither the jolly hospital (this time consisting of Sara, Giulia and Amy), who for the entire game gave strength to the Mad Cows by cheering them with the usual vocal power. Nor Capoultrà Marco, who has already seen so many Mucche games that he probably saw this coming anyway. Nor Laister, the regained mascot, the people’s favourite, the “cane gobbo” as she was nicknamed by the referee (“È bianconero!”). Nor the cronista, who is just reporting events anyhow. All we could do is watch the wall come down.
Yet there is the good old Mucche motto, sprayed in green letters on the blog – and on the wall: Be proud! With so much effort put in by everyone, defeat is bitter, but it is bittersweet: everyone did her best. In the end, commitment does not count in numbers, but it builds a team. And that’s why, in the end, there were again many smiling faces, even though the wall did not withstand the trials and tribulations of time. There will be another full moon next month.
