Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog

Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog!

The Mad Cows is the EUI's female five-a-side soccer team. We play just for fun and absolute beginners are warmly welcomed. Playing with the Mad Cows is a nice way to do some sports and meet new people to share some beers with. The members of the Mad Cows come from all environments and all nationalities: EUI researchers from all the departments, partners, members of the staff and people from outside the EUI world.
See you on the pitch!

“…e va bene così”: Mucche Pazze 2 – Firenze Calcio A5 9

Back in the days when the Iron Curtain still divided Europe into a capitalist and a socialist camp, people said that Hungary was “the jolliest barrack in the socialist camp.” Now these days are gone of course, together with the socialist camp, and judging from their election results Hungarians are not that jolly any more either. Quite opposite to the Mucche Pazze, who certainly have the jolliest hospital of the whole league with Sara and Giulia. And this jolliness seemed to be contagious, so that by the end of tonight’s match everybody was really in a good mood, despite the fact that the team had lost 2-9.
With a result like that, I have no real intention to dwell too much on the game as such. Suffice it to say that according to Sara’s observation the opposition had a goalkeeper who had apparently escaped from a movie theatre somewhere where they were showing “The Incredibles”, and a midfielder who bore striking resemblance to Rodrigo Taddei from “la magica” Roma. Apart from that I will be as objective as the Italian radio commentator who was reporting on the Inter-Barca match on RAI. On the way back from the pitch I heard him make the most amazing comment about the game where Barca was not awarded one or two penalties and Milito scored from an offside position: “L’Inter sta vincendo 3-1, l’arbitro da una mano all’Inter, e va bene così.”
According to that logic, I will just write about that beautiful goal that Mimi scored, and that other great goal that Mi Ah scored after her first shot was blocked by the “incredible” goalie. And I will skip the part where I would have to say that this only happened in the second half, and that it was the 1-5 and 2-6 respectively. I will further not describe in any detail the nine goals that the opposition scored, quite a few of them with quick and devastating counterattacks. Nor will I write anything insulting about their ridiculous captain, who first kicked Mi Ah and then even complained to the referee when he called it a foul. Being the captain of a football team takes more than just having a fascia with a “C” on your arm.
I will rather concentrate on the genuinely good mood that prevailed among the supporters and the team. On the repeated cheers by Sara and Giulia, who kept shouting “Forza Mucche, moooo!” On the following dialogue that took place after Amy, instead of passing the ball into the box, took a shot that however went wide:
Paolo: “Amy, anche dentro!”
Mi Ah: “Dentro la porta?”
Paolo: “Andrebbe pure bene.”
And of course I will make the following two observations: for one thing, it was not by coincidence that the Mucche scored both of their goals in the second half, since they played quite a decent match there, in spite of what the final result says. And secondly, it was good to see how everyone got a chance to play. Not that it made a huge difference in the end as far as the result is concerned, but it was good to see all the Mad Cows leaving the pitch with a smile on their face. With a happy sight like that you easily forget that this was the fifth defeat in row. Va bene così.
