Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog

Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog!

The Mad Cows is the EUI's female five-a-side soccer team. We play just for fun and absolute beginners are warmly welcomed. Playing with the Mad Cows is a nice way to do some sports and meet new people to share some beers with. The members of the Mad Cows come from all environments and all nationalities: EUI researchers from all the departments, partners, members of the staff and people from outside the EUI world.
See you on the pitch!

Mad Cows vs. Mix-Team

After many - MANY - wins, the team tasted the bitterness of a defeat. Not that we’re not familiar with it, but it still hurts. We started well, suspiciously well. Everyone on time, all documents, nobody forgot the socks, the tape, or the thousand accessories we need to kick a ball. We were so on time that we shared the changing room with our last defeaters… Sancat. Maybe they did some voodoo on our forwards golden feet, because the ball did not make it to the goal even once in 50 minutes. Not even the known “long shoots and see if it touch the ass of someone and get’s in” worked. The aim was totally biased on Tuesday.

We even started even doing warm-up exercises (really, you see? That is odd). Because this team gets its power form chaos, the order seemed to confuse us. Still, we started with a solid 13 minutes - aprox. let’s be generous. With a strong defense, amazing goalie, order and position about right. Some attacks, even stealing balls… Mix team started to shit in their pants, they were not able to get in or jump us, and their connections were lost because we were just on point, but then… we got a goal. And short after, two more. The feared and famous five minutes of “it’s raining shit” made their appearance. And while a 1-0, generally, make us move our asses and start to get on the game, with a 3-0 we just look the to the clock and pray to the Pope to make the pain stop. And that, my dears, it was what killed us.

They were a good team, yes. They had great players, true. But, that did not make such a difference, we have great players too. The main difference is that they fought for each inch of the pitch. Their eagerness to get the ball stroke us, and we started to just follow their lead, as doggies chasing a ball. Then, when we got the ball, we gave it back to them. Just like a doggie expecting another throw to run and catch up the ball. They were good, but we are not bad, the difference is that they fought for the ball, they wanted it and enjoyed it. We seemed better at holding than creating.

Yet, we got back on our feet, or sort of. We seemed to find again our positions, the kicks awaken us and the walking dead cows starting to bite to get the ball, from time to time. Bea, la regina della porta, held us with amazing saves and some Spanish encouraging words that I’ll better not translate… Sharknado Ale was ready to fight for each ball, giving it all on the pitch, a bit annoyed because of doggie-chasing approach. Totally on point. The visit of the Pope to Florence inspired Ieva the Word of Moises, who opened the wall of Mix team defense. Literally, they just moved out of her way. The poor goalie was stroked by the power of The Word. Bea seemed to be jealous of the miracle performed by Ieva, so she performed her “savior” role and stopped an autogoal of Pinky Brewser, who almost scored with her back-ass.

Yet, the defeat and our game was not so bad. Sporadically, the hope seemed to enlighten us, and we were fighting for the ball, and for the match. But, the hope seemed to come and go randomly, as if at a times we just felt that we’re too old for this shit and wanted to go directly for the beers. So, girls, let’s try to learn from this game. We won’t win if we don’t fight for each inch of the pitch. Mix team was good. A good team, but we are not bad, and we should stop thinking we can’t make it and drop the game before it ends. We can make it, if we fight, if we talk, if we just play as we know we can. In sum, if we start believing we could start dreaming.

Miracolo Gazella Turpeinen vs. Kindergarten

As the old good times, the epic decided to visit the Herd. For second time in this season, the team smashed their opponent without mercy. The superiority was so clear that, even before the second half, Nino got bored that decided to change the position of all the players: defenders as forwards, forwards as defenders, and Mira everywhere.

But as the good old times too, we started the journey, though, with a collective heart attack when Mira screamed NOOOOO in the changing room without being able to articulate word for some seconds. We were all panicking, thinking she forgot her football shoes...  false alarm, it was just the headband - pure girl drama- solved by mum Bea with a bunch of head accessories for heart broken Mira. After teasing her a bit, she managed to get under control her Justin Bieber bangs, and was ready to score a bunch of goals.

The game started, and here is where the magic happened. The association in the initial attack was just perfect. With Shark Ale fighting for each ball and inch of the pitch, dribbling opponents and perfectly harmonized with Gazelle Mira, the goals were just a matter of time.  She also did a great job in defense, for exasperation of Bea, who was freezing on the goal box. Letizia the Bomb sent a powerful cannon to the goal, that was impossible to stop. Letizia the Bomb sent a powerful cannon to the goal that was impossible to stop. Mainly, because if you were on the way of the ball you would lose an arm, leg or head in the crash. Proficient in the middle of the pitch, she got all the balls and helped both in defense and attack. It was the player who connected both sides of the pitch, an important add to our game. Eventually, everyone joined the attack (well, not Bea, but almost).  Magalí alias but my chocolate is from Belgium, did have a bunch of opportunities as well as Captain Sanne Sparrow, that bored in the defense had her chances in the opponents goal. Both of them have the honor of assisting goals to Gazelle, who tried to give back the favor by waiting for them until they were ready to receive an assist and score, quite close but not quite in, the new attackers tried and tried for desperation of the Athena goalie.

And the only one who stayed, formally, in defense, all the game was, Marilú Stasi, former presidenta- in-pettore. She was a tower in the middle of the defense. The poor kids didn’t have a chance against her, and she even joined the attack a couple of times, but as a good defender, she was lost in dribbling and the goal didn’t come. Well, there was someone else in the defense, Frozen Bea. She was so bored that she was about to have some pop corn and watch the match from the goal. Yet, she managed to get some warm and crashed with the little kid who scored between her legs. Unfortunate goal that didn’t really count much, I mean we should let kids score, at least, an honor goal.

Perhaps is about time for the MVP of all times, the soul of the victories our light on the pitch (mainly because, yes, you shine under the lights as a true Finn (not Swedish, we know, we know)): Mira Gazelle Turpeinen. Because, let’s be honest my dears, this team reaches another level when she is on the pitch. It was so sublime, so astonishing, so great that the coach of the other team was screaming, desperate and finally laughing: please for god sake just stop her, do whatever you need but stop her at least once. They celebrated that they got the ball from her as goals, thrilling and hugging each other. The faces of the poor kids were petrified every time she got the ball, as if they’ve seen the boogieman. They just panicked, as primitive animals, they played dead to have some mercy. No chance, she was always there either to score or assist.  In fact, the only one who managed to successfully tackle her during the evening was the light post during the warming up… and herself.

At some point, Gazelle felt a bit guilty with all the goals and the possibility of being the capocannoniere of the league with just two games, so she started to assist everyone around. The problem was, we’re not as fast as she is, so she had to wait a bit… well, ok, A LOT. I tried several times, she was a bit desperate and yell to me “Gooooo Laila, (seriously, when are you going to learn my name?) where are you? are you coming?!” which I had to answer “Well, I AM TRYING”. Lost in the attack, I started to be Darth Vader again, I am definitely not made for run. I did not handle well the first passes, but sooner than later Gazelle understood my turtle approach to running, my lack of controlling skills while running, and decided to give me an amazing pass to my feet, that ended in the goal.

Finally, with a total 12 goals, is time to say goodbye, AGAIN, to our beloved Gazelle Mira, the new queen of cakes and, so far, Capocannoniere. Her, supposed, last game of the season was, without a doubt, its best. We know you have a Tiger on every port, but only one herd, so we forgive your affairs with other teams.  Hope to see you soon, as always, making poetry with a ball.

If you love Mad Cows, God loves you, too!

So the moment has arrived. For the final report of a great season, full of sprints & spritzs, cake-eating, in-the-van-and-elsewhere singing, dressing room (and not only) dancing, freezing in Curva, dog-sitting during games, injuries obtained both on the pitch and dance floor, enjoyment of wet trainings & matches, ball & shin (and not only) kicking, lots of ghiaccio (not only for us but also for our opponent teams), Sax Bar after-match chillouts, match reports, post-match lunches and whatever else is involved when one is a truly MAD COW.

Yap, but it all started as usual. Well, apart from the fact that our coach Jony together with logistics manager Nú(t)ria had a bit of difficulties to actually assemble squadra for the last game. With four out of five team’s Capocannonieres having left or not available, EUI van not in use, some of players travelling around or still injured, official Match Reporter partying in Barcelona – given all this, we ended with probably the smallest game squadra that we have had during all the season. And on top of that, we had to face Florence – the best team of this play-off round, girls who have played together for some 20 years and against whom we already had lost the first match 1:8.

However, knowing that good teams actually prefer playing football and not newly invented kicking-hugging-boxing discipline, knowing that good teams are less inclined towards acting-faking-exercise “you did breathe on my neck, I did fall” and having extreme faith in recently developed “there is only one attack in football and it’s called defense” strategy, Mad Cows felt quite confident and even excited. And off we went. And yes, we enjoyed what turned out to be one of the best matches of the season. Well, if not in terms of result (0:6 the final score), then absolutely in terms of dedication and team spirit.

For the first and the last time of the season we stepped on the pitch without the usual “1-2-3-oleeee” thing. Paradoxically enough, Sara the Goshi Sister was not with the team to experience that, what a pity for her.

As always, we were shielded by our Torito, the Wise and Wonderful, who seems to improve with each game his skill of implementing “carrot and stick” approach on his Herd. As for stick, before the match coach had specifically emphasized that everybody – even (three exclamation marks here) Francis the Kid – must return in time for defense. Otherwise he promised to be very disappointed. (By the way, the Kid finally obeyed instructions and actually did what Torito was asking for). As for carrot, after the game he promised to get Ieva The Word whatever she wants as reward for her performance in goal box . “Whatever” basically included a lover. Or, to be more precise, the exact number mentioned was “3” (simultaneously, I guess; though, he did not specify their gender). By the way, Torito, I’m still waiting for my DHL delivery. Just sayin’.

The strength (as well as yet future potential) of Mad Cows was best shown by the first half which ended 0:1!!! And this is the time when defense line earns to be mentioned first. And I know what I’m talking about because I doubt whether I have had previous matches where I felt so protected in my goalie’s position. And I mean – literally “protected”. You know, there is this famous story, well known for those familiar with USSR hero stories – about a soldier named Matrosov, who during WW2 threw himself onto a German pillbox in order to block German machine-gun with his own chest. He died, of course, but during this moment his unit was able to advance and, consequently, to win the battle. (That’s basically how they entertained children in soviet times – while Western kid was listening how Cinderella lost her shoe as a bedtime story, we were told how to become a noble communist comrade. OK, I am actually kidding here). My point is: the team was full of Matrosovs that evening. At some point I started to reckon how many times everybody had received ball into their face (or other part of the body) from distance around 2 metres or less. But I lost count quite fast. Everybody – Marilú Captain & Commander, Nú(t)ria Mano Larga, Sanne Blonde Torita, Loredana Ghiaccio, Elisa Collina Piras and Francesca La Fantastica Asfaltrice from Korleone family – showed absolute dedication implementing “you will pass not” doctrine on our side of the pitch.

It might be so that considerable part of merits here go to Nú(t)ria Mano Larga-ChiudeLeGambe who had trained the Herd to follow strictly the order “Defeeeeeeeense!!! Baaaaaaaack!!!”. She has succeeded so well that now there is no need for goalie to shout those magic words anymore. The moment when opponent team started their counterattack, all Cows were already running furiously back to our goal box. Brilliant!!

And when even that did not help, we noticed that we were not quite alone on the pitch. Firstly it happened when after particularly strong shot ball dashed against goal-post, rolled exactly parallel to the goal line, all length of it, then dashed to the other side goal-post and rebounded back into middle, just in my hands. A moment later and… pfuuuu, almost identical situation. More or less the next minutes were something like first 50 sec in this video. Obviously, that was one of those revelation moments you can have only few times in your lifetime.

The second half of the match was pretty much the same. The Herd fought till the last breath, running forward and back, Football God showed his goal-post mercy again (at least once), I did my couple of saves but... time went on, we got tired, I added my contribution with couple of received goals due to “still haven’t succeeded in closing my legs” symptom and, let’s admit, Florence is a brilliant team indeed. Basically their attack consists of a round of four people, a round which is rotating all the time around its centre and simultaneously moving forward. Thus sooner or later you feel like watching a never-ending carousel. Just that this carousel with certain regularity spits out dangerous cannon balls our brave Cow-Matrosovs were so ready and eager to meet.

However, don’t forget that we had to prove that we were still Mad Cows, after all! So yes, there was a bit of show this time, too. First element of that being: one of the most beautiful auto goals of the season. Basically the story goes like that: Nú(t)ria was so excited not to be goalie anymore and to regain her title as the Queen of Defense that at some moment she couldn’t restrain her thrill anymore – in absolutely elegant manner she intercepted opponents’ pass in the front of the goalbox, touched the ball tenderly and…changed its flight completely so that we faithfully fulfilled Mad Cows’ “at least 1 autogoal per game!” dogma.

Another show element involved opponent player in the run, me diving to her legs to steal the ball before she shoots and her not stopping. Ouch! And that’s how I never play piano again. Of course, given all the adrenaline, rational mind and analytical skills had left me completely and the only thing I could deliver was some unquotable praying (to all that asked later – no, it was not Latvian, in moments of extremely deep joy I actually use Russian) and words “I CAN keep playing. And I WILL” (myself being the only person who was actually convinced by them). The show ended with a bit of ghiaccio and mystic sentence “According to my experience…” which I never ended and actually don’t remember delivering but obviously it sounded so intriguing that match referee even approached our Torito afterwards just to ask what exactly was meant by that (by the way, ENGLISH speaking referee, finally?!?)

Yes, and part of the show was also telling the involved opponent player that it was not nice from her side not stop in time. But, of course, not everybody can be Finnish so exact wording was rather this. She listened, apologized and next attack Florence has, it’s the same striker of theirs, the same side of the pitch, the same position and guess what… at least Laia should understand now why this song had to be included in Mad Cows pre-match dancing playlist. As result, I was so shocked that my previous threat had not worked that this time “You say it best when you say nothing at all” approach was implemented. To put it more precisely; and after that, this.

And last but not least – the Curva. With Bea the 2.0 Reporter & Photographer and the newest generation of Cows (Clara & Inés), Guillaume and Francisco, they probably drank a bit less wine than Curva usually does but their presence and shouts helped a lot during the darkest minutes of our pitch craziness. The last touch was way back to Sax Bar when “singing-dancing car” (YES, Kid was in that car; and Blonde Torita actually executed some possibly dangerous movements due to her willingness rather dance with us than drive the car) was overtaken by the car of one of Florence players. She seemed to be mildly confused noticing us behaving like we were the champions of the match. Which, of course, only increased our happiness.

To summarize it all, there are no more words left than YOU'RE AWESOME! And I’m not talking only about this particular match. All the season was amazing! I truly believe that’s been quite an experience to everybody – to be a part of the team which was built up of people who mostly didn’t know each other half a year ago and some of whom hadn’t played football since childhood (if ever). A team which had its wins and its losses, its bad and good moments and which, above all things, kept having a SPIRIT, both on the pitch and dance floor. A team which can look back to the very first match of the season (against Ludus, remember?!) and proudly say to itself – yes, we have walked quite a road. And we have damned enjoyed it!

Coppa Pavone 2014

Dears,
Yes you know it; it's that time of the year again...time for the prestigious COPPA PAVONE! The one and only football tournament of the year, which is taking place just here and involves the whole EUI community.
Coppa Pavone will take place from Monday 2nd to Thursday 12th of June, one day before the June Ball (bear in mind that these dates could be altered depending on the number of teams participating). It will be played at our very own campo sportivo of calcetto at Villa Schifanoia.
On Friday the 23rd of May the Coppa Pavone Party will take place at Bar Fiasco; it will include the official draw of Coppa Pavone. A few days after the calendar will go public.
This year both Coppa Pavone and Coppa Pavone Femminile are taking place again during the same dates. Both tournaments are perfectly compatible and all players will be allowed to register for both competitions and it will be absolutely feasible for them to play on both of them.
All the news about Coppa Pavone will be published on the EUI Calcio Blog and on the official Facebook Group

COPPA PAVONE
In order to register for the tournament, the Coppa Pavone Committee (CPC) needs the official application of teams, indicating clearly: team’s name, name of players and their link to the EUI, team's captain and t-shirt colour. Please remember that all participants MUST be RELATED with the EUI.
Teams can be of any size (with a limitation of 15 players), but the rules state that there must always be at least one female player on the pitch at all times. The whole rules for the tournament will be shortly circulated.
DEADLINE: Please send the teams before Sunday 12th May at the latest to coppapavone14@gmail.com, so the CPC can start fixing the dates and the calendar.

COPPA PAVONE FEMMINILE
If you have a team, you can register it as such, otherwise you can just sign up and be part of the pool of participants from which we will create several balanced teams. In order to create the teams, we need: name, link with the EUI and any schedule constraint.
The teams should be made up of 4 women and 1 man who must be the goalkeeper and who cannot leave the penalty box area. The whole rules for the tournament will be shortly circulated.
DEADLINE: Please send the teams / individual participation before the 9th of May at the latest to cpf.eui@gmail.com, so the CPC can start creating the teams and fixing the calendar.

Hope to see you all there!
