Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog

Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog!

The Mad Cows is the EUI's female five-a-side soccer team. We play just for fun and absolute beginners are warmly welcomed. Playing with the Mad Cows is a nice way to do some sports and meet new people to share some beers with. The members of the Mad Cows come from all environments and all nationalities: EUI researchers from all the departments, partners, members of the staff and people from outside the EUI world.
See you on the pitch!

The Word of Ieva

This is The Word of Ieva. Believe in it and respect it!

1. Ball alone is NOT dangerous. Ball + person IS dangerous. Crowd is NOT cool.

Which means - when there is a complete chaos in our defence zone (with all the respect to really marvellous defence I saw in the last trainings which I took part in, it will happen now and then), let's not run after the ball in one crowd (of cows, heh). It's enough if you see that somebody (or two) of our team is already heading towards the ball. Instead, let's rather check / cover (free) players of the opponent team and let's stop them of getting access to ball.

It also means, for instance, that - when you run back to defence and you see that opponent player (with ball) is alrady covered with somebody from our team / or somebody from our team is at least running towards the opponent, your first instinct should NOT be to go and help. Your first instinct in such a situation should be - to check what happens with other players of opponent team. BECAUSE if you see that opponent player is already covered with 1 our player and you are also in the movement to join to your teammate and to make pressure 2 against 1, firstly a RED WARNING BULB should automatically be switched on in your head saying that - if we are 2 against 1, it means that at least one other opponent player is FREE, without a cover. And very probable, she is already waiting at the far side of the goalie for the pass (and score). and imagine, if something like that is done already by 2 our players, there is potential of 2 free opponent players in the front of the goalie. and so on, and so on. Briefly - crowd is not cool.

BUT I am not saying that you cannot go and do this pressure 2 against 1. Not at all! becaue it all depends on situation. Just - before you do so, check that no other opponent players ahve been left uncovered in a good strategical position near the goalie. Or, in other words, do join for 2 against 1 pressure if you are sure that you cover at the same time the trajectory of the potentiall pass to other players from opponent team.

2. Visibility, visibility, visibility.

I know, that will probably be a discovery of the century but - human beings are not invisible.

Which means - if you stand between the opponent player and goalie territory, basically it is a good position to be in control. UNLESS you both (or 3, counting the ball, too) have moved too close to goalie. Imagine - when opponent player does a kick with you being between goalie and her, the goalie needs time to see the ball coming out of this duel + react. if this "duel" happens before  the white line of goalie territory, it is still ok timing to notice the ball and to react. If it happens inside already, with 2,5 m or 2 m, or 1 (!!! sic) from goalie, it is 99,9% goal because there is simply no time to actually see the ball, not even talking about reacting. In such situations I would even say I prefer having an opponent player with the ball alone in the front of me than opponent player with the ball AND my own defense player in front of the goalie. Because in the 1st situation I can at least see the ball and pray (in Latvian) for some luck. In the 2nd situation I guess, I will notice the ball only when it will already be IN the goalie.

Solution?? when you cover opponent player who is in the run towards goalie area (and when it all takes place already close enough, I'm not talking about middle of the field, of course), try to use your body to stop her. Just stand in their way and don't worry about the fact that ball alone goes somewhere further. I will take care of that ball if you take care of detaching the opponent player from this ball.

But if still we are in the situation when we all as a team are pushed very close to the goalie - it usually happens after corners - try somehow to use your body to go and push opponent players away. I know, it sounds tricky but somehow. the point here is - do not wait for them to approach, go and approach them first!!! if you let them to push you closer to goalie, imagine that everybody is doing the same at the same time!! or, in other words - imagine that here is some kind of net being around the goalie territory - it means that this net is tightening. and in one moment is it so tight that you actually become goalies yourself, not field players anymore just because I simply don't see where the ball is if there are 3 persons in the front of me. In this situation doesn't matter these 3 persons in the front of me are our players or opponents. You all reduce my visibility and I hate you all :ppp

Thereby your task is to untighten this net. You can do it, of course, in the best way - getting the ball and kicking it away. BUT while / if we are not controlling the ball, try to get opponent players away, don't wait them coming closer to goalie territory. Just use your body (but, of course,  in a way that you don't get yellow card or they don't sue you for sexual harassment). And yes, centimetres can matter here!!

Ok, anyway, let's go out there and kick them all!!! :)))
