Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog

Welcome to the Mad Cows' blog!

The Mad Cows is the EUI's female five-a-side soccer team. We play just for fun and absolute beginners are warmly welcomed. Playing with the Mad Cows is a nice way to do some sports and meet new people to share some beers with. The members of the Mad Cows come from all environments and all nationalities: EUI researchers from all the departments, partners, members of the staff and people from outside the EUI world.
See you on the pitch!

Yes we can! Mucche Pazze 2 – Joker FC 0

Whoever had lived through Fiorentina’s unlucky defeat against Lyon the night before could only consider him- or herself lucky to see the Mucche Pazze play on that freezing Wednesday night. Not that it was any warmer at Virgin Sports than at Stadio Franchi, but the result of the match was a lot more pleasing – and deservedly so! Six brave Mad Cows in green (Valeria, Costy V., Isabell, Mi Ah, Sandra, Amy) took on only five female Jokers in red, a numerical advantage that was possibly decisive in the end.
The Jokers were off a good start and had a couple of shots on Valeria’s goal. In this they were assisted by the still slightly uncoordinated game of the Mucche in the first ten minutes, which left the opposition lots of space to attempt to score from various positions. But the initial offensive went by without any countable result, and soon the Emmepi struck back, consolidating their defense and starting to be more courageous up front. Their attacks became more frequent, and towards the end of the first half Amy took aim from the edge of the box, hammering the ball against the cross bar. 0-0 at half time was the logical result of this encounter of two teams of equal strength.
The second half brought further improvement for the Emmepi. An even tighter defense hardly left any space any more to the skilful Jokers to combine or shoot, and the Reds turned increasingly desperate. And the Mucche took advantage of this: at some point Mi Ah got hold of the ball in midfield, made it to the box and sent the ball into the net for a well-deserved 1-0 lead.
This goal had some effect on the Jokers’ morale and confidence. Chasing the deficit they tried to score with daring but imprecise shots from all over the place, which were either stopped by Valeria or went astray. Unlike a free kick from centre circle taken by Sandra, which went through a scrum of players in the box and into the goal to give the Emmepi the decisive 2-0 lead. After that, the Joker girls grew even more desperate and tired, while the Mad Cows stayed calm, despite the overly zealous arbitro who gave the opposition a free kick from the edge of the box for no obvious reason. But like most of the other shots taken by the reds in the second half it went wide.
That is why in the end there stood a well-deserved 2-0 victory for the Mucche Pazze, a result of great commitment and teamwork. This score seems to be the standard result when the author of these lines is present at the match. As this is not going to be the case next week, all that remains to be said right now is: Forza Emmepi, far, far away at Pontassieve, and keep up the spirit!
